She was bone tired. Right to her core. She pulled her phone from her back pocket and called Skye.

“Hi Charly. How are you?”

“I’m fine. I’m sorry it’s so late. How’s Olive?”

“She’s fine. We baked today. Worked with the horses. Shelby came and picked up Anders and Callie, but Olive opted to stay. She helped me make dinner, we ate. Lincoln came home after supper and he ate, then we sat and played Monopoly, which Olive won at. She’s sound asleep in our spare bedroom. If you don’t mind, just leave her here for the night. She’s resting so peacefully.”

Charly smiled. “Sounds like you wore her out. I’m so happy you all had a good day. Thank you again for watching her.”

“Oh my goodness, it’s our pleasure. Any sign of Haylie?”

“No. I so hoped we’d find her tonight, but no.”

“You’ll find her. I have faith in you all.” Skye reassured.

She ended her call with Skye and turned to see Sam standing a few feet away.

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah. Sounds like Olive had a great day with Skye and Lincoln. She’s staying there tonight.”

“You good with that?”

Charly smiled at him. “I am. She needs fun and happiness in her life and I know she’s safe as can be there. They practically have their place locked up like Fort Knox.”

Sam laughed and she enjoyed watching him. His eyes crinkled in the corners and it was incredibly handsome on him. “It’s a job hazard, babe.”

She nodded and then felt a bit sheepish. What next?

Sam took her right hand in his and squeezed as he walked her to her car. They’d stopped at the station to check on Phillip Smith, answered a million questions, and wrote out reports. She’d then reported in to RAPTOR and they’d just now been released from all the work. It was well past midnight and it had been a long, damned day. Still, she wanted more. More with Sam.

He stopped walking with her as they reached her car and she stopped and faced him. His visage softened. His police face had been left at the door of the station. “Come home with me, Charly. Spend the night with me.”

Her heart raced and her stomach struggled to contain the butterflies that erupted. She smiled at him and nodded. “Yes.” She couldn’t say anything more. Just that one simple word.

He leaned down and kissed her lips softly. “Do you want to ride with me?”

“No. I’ll follow you.”

She wanted to say yes. But she wanted her independence and having her vehicle there was her way of having it. Sort of. She knew it was silly, but she still needed that.

“Okay. Follow me.”

He kissed her again, then turned and walked to his car. She felt the loss of him as he walked away and she wanted to run after him, but instead, she took a deep breath and got into her car.

She followed behind Sam; he lived fairly close. And she knew where he lived because, shame on her, she’d researched him on the public records. She found his house and drove by a couple of times.
